In response to MD, from my reading of SAGN, I believe the production was accurate to the story wrt nudity during the “peephole” scene. The book also spent much more time on Leland’s plotting of Hank’s downfall as well as his dark brooding over what Hank and Leland’s mother had done in that same bedroom (viewed by Leland through the same peephole). The gravity of the scene, particularly the Oedipian role of Viv (symbolizing Leland’s mother), as well as accuracy to the novel, one could argue, could have been diluted by circumspect attire.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the performance. I’ve had interesting discussions with him and with my all-women book group about the nudity in the play. Though we all agreed that the actress is lovely, none of us could articulate the benefit of having her appear nude twice. What artistic purpose did it serve? Could the love scene not been as effective with her wearing a sheer nightgown? Was it artistic necessity or just an emphasis on the one female body on stage? And why did we see so little of Leland?

Just pondering!

Sometimes a Great Notion was incredible. This was my very favorite production my family and I have seen in the last 3 years. The acting was phenomenal! Thank you for this incredible experience in the theatre.
