Amazing show last night on a historic day– Barack’s first day as the first African American President!

As a second year PCS season ticket holder I must say JOB WELL DONE! You have offered PDX a modern, contemplative and conceptual production in a city that prefers “playing it safe” with theater.

I would like to apologize to the cast that they did not receive a standing ovation. I looked around and was amazed to see everyone sitting. With all due respect, the audience comprised a large number of senior citizens who probably had stiff knees from sitting so long.I prefer to believe the audience was still digesting the content and exchanging conceptual meaning rather than dissing the production.

It is a sad time in our culture when attention spans have shrunk to television standards. Sure the production was long but every second was spent toward enriching the meaning of the piece– a cadence to elaborate a point.

This production will be with me for a very long time. The content, artful interpretation, choreography, sets and acting were all amazing and deserving of attention!

Perhaps conceptual, artful productions like this could bring a younger patron to PCS. It is always good to broaden an audience. Thanks for not giving me a season of “expected” productions.

I invited 3 friends to join me for their first visit to PCS and see Apollo. While could appreciate the information the play was including, it was painfully long with far too much repetition in an attempt to make a point. “We got it!” the first ten times. We left before the end of the third act. Numerous others didn’t come back for the 3rd act at all. I would love to see a thoughtfully edited version.

Am I the only one who thought this play needed to be cut by at least two hours? Does the majority of the theatre-going public not know that the US Space program was in large part developed by German scientists? Why does Ms. Keystone have to repeat her points over and over ad nauseum? This play needs a lot of work.

The play started at 7:30 and around 10:40 the year “1964″ flashed on the screen. I whispered to my companion, “Does this mean we still have 45 years to go?” Good first act, but ultimately pretentious in its scope and badly in need of editing. My theatre companion agreed.

Some was heavy handed, but that was fine. My issues were, that the first two acts and the third act seemed like two separate plays. There were characters that only seemed to be added as an afterthought (priest for example) maybe to try to tie them together, but didn’t really seem to be integral to either story. Then there was Apollo, started the play, ended act 2 then not seen again? seemed tacked on. Same with the silly muse costume, every time it showed up there was laughter (did I miss something or was that the intent?)

There was a significantly smaller audience at the end of the play than the beginning, which was too bad. I agree with the other comments. The play could benifit from an editor.

Why not make it two plays? two nights (like the Beard of Avon) tie them together, but make them stand alone. Both issues (nazi rocket scientists, race) deserved attention, but this seemed to dilute both.

The diner scene was very effective. The war criminal aspect of the german scientists was something that I didn’t fully know about (did some) but was interesting.

I did object to the line about if you want to be a murderer become a scientist. Nice. Yes, that is why I became a scientist vs. oh, join the military, start a manufacturing company in a third world country, go into politics, etc. Was that really the point? Looked to me that lots of folk had dirty hands, not just the scientists.

Hi, I saw Apollo last night and thought it was amazing. I experienced a tremendous swing in my response to it. Before the first intermission I actually wondered if we should leave early! I think that this was my visceral response to the intensity, and somewhat abstract portrayal of the early period. I was also wondering what another two or more hours of this would be like! By the time the intermission came though I was sufficiently intrigued to stay. At the end of the second intermission I wondered aloud to my wife “what are they going to do in an hour and a half!” By the time the end of the play came I was in tears (good tears.) We both agreed that this was the most powerful, unique and moving play we have ever seen not to mention a history lesson. The only thing I might have liked, although this would make the play yet longer, would be the return of the god to comment on the events, something like an ancient greek play. Thanks!

Just came home from a “matinee” that ended with dinner – I agree with everyone who says that this play is WAY TOO LONG!! There is a lot of good stuff in there, but (to me) it was not worth sitting through 3 1/2+ hours to get to it! Cut it by half, do away with most of the “Greek Chorus” (we were sitting in the back of the first level and missed a lot of dialogue, as did many of our neighbor!) and keep it on topic (the whole Civil Rights movement is worthy of its own play – it doesn’t need to be woven into this one!)

Saw Apollo with a friend and was amazed ! How timely,interesting and what a great evening. The complexity of the material necessitated the length of the play, not a problem for me. Several days later saw a show on History Channel about the recruitment of German scientist to this country. It’s always interesting to see our own involvement in important issues; we often point our fingers at others and forget to look at ourselves.
