An Interview with Playwright Frank Higgins

Frank Higgins is the playwright of Black Pearl Sings!, which opens next Friday in the Ellyn Bye Studio. In this interview, Higgins describes his experience writing Black Pearl Sings!  – from researching American folklore, to discovering the story that led to creating his characters, to finding an African song which would serve as one of the most powerful moments in the play.

Inspiring a Friendship, and a Play

If you keep your ears pressed against the cultural railroad tracks here at Portland Center Stage, you may have heard that Black Pearl Sings! by Frank Higgins, coming up next in the Ellen Bye Studio, is loosely based on true events. Can you name the American blues legend whose experiences in the 1930s inspired this play? Teleservices Agent Frank Ciavarello explores the true story that inspired a friendship and, now, a play.
