{photo: Ah, LiveWire. Audience haiku, wacky guests, faces for radio theater. I love it. And I’m utterly delighted we’re hosting them here at the Armory on August 23rd.}
August is supposed to be a quiet month at the Armory. Our rental coordinator is usually up to her eyeballs in weekend weddings, but otherwise people take their vacations, artistic directors spend time on their balconies overlooking the mezzanine scrawling notes about craps games and dreaming of new ways to truss up hot box girls, while the various administrative departments sneak away for daylong “retreats” involving gin martinis and nefarious plots to take over the world (or at least inspire people to spend more time at the theater).
But this August, I am absolutely thrilled to announce that the Armory will be hosting one of Oregon’s tallest (and most talented citizens), Trailblazer Channing Frye, plus Secretary of State Bill Bradbury, the Dandy Warhols and a whole host of cello players, booze hounds and white lightning purveyors from all over the country.
The stars have aligned to bring The Great Distiller’s Festival and the 50th Anniversary taping of Portland’s radio vaudeville variety show LiveWire to the Armory next weekend. We would be delighted if you would join us for both.
Here’s what you need to know:

The Great Distiller’s Festival will feature artisan distillers from all over the country, purveying gin, whiskey, vodka and specialty rums and discussing mixology techniques and the finer points of buzz maintenence. All your favorite bartenders will be out in force at this one, trying to score the grand prize in the mixology contest.
When: Saturday August 23 to Sunday August 24
Time: 10 am to 9 pm
Cost:$10 gets you a taster glass and three taster coupons. $16 gets you in both days.

LiveWire will bring all of its wacky vaudevillean glory to the PCS Main Stage the same weekend, and their guest line up is going to be highly worth the price of admission. Ever been to a live radio show taping before? It’s pretty great. You get to see the gaffes behind the guffaws, and there’s always some determined catcaller from the back row who just wants to make sure his mom hears his voice on the radio.
Garrison Keillor would kill for the line up that LiveWire’s got planned for this taping: The Dandy Warhols will sing songs from their new album, Bill Bradbury (who, in addition to being the chief signature counter for Oregon’s voter-initiative obsessed electoral process has been tapped by Al Gore to be one of his Climate Project regional directors), plus everybody’s favorite Blazer center Channing Frye. Is it time for Portland to reclaim the mantle as Rip City? Channing Frye has opinions on this subject. Trust me.
Rounding out the list is the Portland Cello Project, which will lug its many many cellos up the Armory Main Stage stairs, and, with luck, provide us with one of their all cello versions of Salt n’ Pepa’s classic “Push It,” or if we’re really lucky, Britney Spears’ “Toxxic.” Oh probably some classical stuff too.
See? Totally kicks the pants off Guy Noir and Powdermilk Biscuits. So you’ll want to be there.
