{Heather Burkhalter}
Department: Facilities
Position: Rental Coordinator
Hometown: Reform, AL , population 1,850. A gas stop between Tuscaloosa, AL and Columbus, MS. Median household income: $19,900. Median house value: $56,600.
What do you love and/or miss about your hometown? Median house value $56,600. Cow- tipping. Every teenager in the county hanging out at the local Texaco. Folklore and ghost stories. Hearing “Bless your heart.” on a regular basis. Everyone over 50 years old referring to you as “Dudley’s daughter”. Payment plans with dentists (I don’t miss my dentist with the alcohol problem however). Lots of land to run, dig, play, ride motorcycles, build tree houses, hide, get chased by donkies, sitting in 1940’s John Deere tractors & wrecked vehicles from drag races. Deep fried pickles.
When you were young what did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to write television theme songs. I also wanted to wash cars for a living.
Favorite part of your job: That one moment when you realize the client is ACTUALLY enjoying the process of planning their event.
Hobbies? Honestly, I’m working most of the time. When not at work, I volunteer. When I’m not there, I lay on the couch watching bad television with a cocktail. Occasionally, I’ll pull out my sketch pad or keyboard, but rarely do so anymore.
Pet? Walter Bednar: a long-haired, lazy cat with low-energy & high-personality. And I spoon him twice a week.
What was your first job? Hard to say – In the same year, I gave saxophone lessons, painted designs in storefront windows, gave rides to pre-teens who didn’t want to ride the school bus (ummm…I was 15 at the time), and played the organ at my church. Spent all my profits by the end of the summer.
What is something most people don’t know about you? When I move into a new place, I hang photos first and arrange the furniture around the photos. And I’m a lifetime member of the Nancy McKeon fan club (“Jo” from “Facts of Life”). I currently own 27 pairs of pants & slacks. 21 button-up shirts. 1 dress. 1 skirt. 10 t-shirts too small. 8 jackets. 0 hair brushes. 7 lipsticks. 10 chapsticks. And 4 pair of holy socks. I own nothing with sequins. I have nothing with lace.
What sets PCS apart from other places you have worked? No one at my last cubicle job ever burst out in song at 11:00am.
Who is one of your biggest inspirations and why?
What is something you are absolutely passionate about? Don’t hate me for sounding all professional now, but here they are: proving that an arts organization CAN be a viable source for cultural enrichment, healthy tourism, community-building and a vehicle for cultural policy and historic preservation; I also feel strongly about local musicians, artists & organizations — their success and ability to manage their career in a way that can sustain them; I dig cool & new innovative (conceptual) ideas toward music and the visual arts; Helping out when it’s needed.
