If you were recently thinking of posting to CL or one of those expensive dating sites with anything remotely similar to the title of this post, STOP! Portland Center Stage is hosting a Gay Speed Dating event next week that could change your life for the better. Who knows, you could look back on June 4th, 2008 as the date that began the romance of a lifetime, the romance of a summer or at least the romance of a weekend. At 5:30pm on that date, 30 lucky, happy singles will begin mingling on the Gerding Theater Mezzanine and literally flirting with destiny.

Portland Center Stage and Willamette Week are thrilled to bring you the perfect event to prepare for Pride ‘08. For the unthinkably low admission of $30 you can enjoy snacks before dating (because some drink more than others at these events, there will be a cash bar in the immediate vicinity), the speed dating experience itself and our hilarious comedy of manners The Little Dog Laughed in the Gerding Theater Studio. Here’s the itinerary:

5:30pm - Mix and Mingle on the Mezzanine
6:15pm - Speed Date like there’s no tomorrow with your host and emcee, PCS Education Director, Kelsey Tyler
7:15pm - Overflowing with infatuation, head down to the Studio for The Little Dog Laughed
9:30ish - Keep the party going with a special happy hour in honor of PCS Speed Daters at District (232 NW 12th Ave.)

All you need to do to get started is call the PCS box office at 503.445.3700 or click on the buy tickets link up and over to the right on this page, select the June 4th performance of The Little Dog Laughed and use the the redemption code SPEEDO. If you can’t say or type “speedo” without cracking up, it’s okay…just call the box office and tell them you want to be part of the Gay Speed Dating event of the century.

Hey, if the fork ran away with the spoon, there’s no telling who you could end up with!

So…is this a “boy-only” speed date, or does it also include feminine outreach?

I’ve spent the last 45 min trying to purchase tickets for this gay speed dating event that I was so excited about, but after 45 min of trying and still not figuring out how to purchase the tickets for it I’m just Frustrated! At this point I’m guessing that you are sold out and that instead of simply putting up a sold out sign on your web page you decided to just let people flounder and waste their time continuing to try to register. If this is the case you might want to think about how many people are walking away frustrated and not returning because of the experience. If I had found a sold out sign, I would have been disappointed and looked for other opportunities to at least see the show. Instead I’m just frustrated and fed up, and will be very leary of any future opportunities from you.

While we have not designed the event with any intention to exclude, my sense so far is that only boys have signed up. That should in no way keep you from seeing this hilarious show, however. Please email me at thomt@pcs.org if you have any questions.

This was a fantastic play with a fabulous cast. I loved the small stage feeling. However, this was not funny as promoted. I didn’t laugh out loud, or find the subject hilarious. I expected a funny play, but instead it was thoughtful and sad. Definitely worth seeing at least once, and I would love to see these actors in another small stage play.

sorry not to get back to you in a public way before now. you are absolutely right about the fact that buying tickets online could and should be easier…especially with a promotion code that is supposed to make things more convenient or at least more affordable. Speaking of affordable, we’re trying to find a solution we can afford to make online purchasing more hassle-free, but, in the effort to protect your privacy to the greatest possible degree, AND make your online purchase work as smoothly as we can, our budget just can’t compare to online retail destinations like a certain south-American river sort of company. We do, however, pride ourselves on the quality and efficiency of our live customer service. I so wish you had taken a moment to speak with someone in the Box Office. The event was quite incredible but it could have been more so if you’d made it.

I had the SAME experience trying to buy tickets online. After registering (which should NOT be required, nor should filling out an entire page of marketing scam questions to GET registered… NOTE: IF I SAY “NO” do NOT send me any info via e-mail about PCS, then NO other questions should be asked. IF I SAY YES, THEN you can provide a pop-up and open up that LONG LIST!!)…..so after registering, signing in, getting to the buy tickets page, I continue to specify 2 tickets….submit….and am repeatedly told my queue is empty. POORLY designed, not checked by the web designer or Q/A to even see if it works, and yet I “hear” a voice telling me when I have to CALL IN that I can buy them on-line. Boo!

I just discussed your reactions with our Marketing Manager and he mentioned that he had nearly the same reaction when he walked through the process himself. Your feedback is very appreciated. We’ll be looking closely this summer at how to streamline the online ordering process to make it more intuitive and less littered with questions you have to answer before you get to the good stuff (ie- the tickets). Check back in with us when tickets go on sale for Guys and Dolls and you may find us much easier to deal with.

Hi Mark, I can tell you specifically what happened to you. if you ask for 2 tickets, and there aren’t two together (or any for that matter) then it just blinks at you blankly. this is definitely something that needs to be fixed, and is admittedly annoying, and we hope to have it all working smoothly by the time tickets for next season go on sale. In the meantime, as Thom said above, we’re awful nice over here in the box office AND we can actually talk with you about what seats are available to be sure you get the best seats possible (rather than letting Mr. Computer decide for you). it’s what we do and we like it!
