Well, the season is upon us. After two days of blissful sunshine, the windy and wet came back today as if to say…”welcome to spookytime.” It was a not-so-subtle reminder that, just a week before the fateful night, I still have no costume to wear when I attend Cabaret for Halloween. You see, I took a look at the calendar weeks ago and thought to myself,
“hmmm, Halloween on Wednesday; that would be a great night to go see Cabaret.”
After all, what holiday and what famous musical both mix the horrific and the debaucherous like Halloween and Cabaret?! Just as the frantic frivolity of the play gives way to solemn reflection on history’s most lamentable course of events, the holiday blends childish trick-or-treating and wildly adult costume parties with, for those who care to remember, a more ancient tradition of honoring souls passed on and recognizing parts of ourselves we wish to put to rest. There’s no denying the match.
I’ve just learned that the entire box office will be decked-out in costume that evening and PCS staff are all hoping the audience participates too. Whether you dress to match the show (plederhosen anyone?) or come as Freddy Krueger, we just want the night to be a festive recognition of the holiday. If you’re coming to see The Underpants that night, the costume possibilities are inumerable, if a bit chilly. As for me, I’m back to the drawing board. I’ve just gotta come up with something half as good as this Chris Coleman/Pirate idea the Box Office dreamed up.
