As visitors to the Armory warm themselves in the hearth-glow of our Fire-wall this holiday season, they’re in for a multitude of treats. In addition to an all-new adaptation of Dickens’ classic Christmas Carol (by our own esteemed Dr. Mead Hunter), patrons may bump up next to a “Fa-La-La-La-La”-touting soprano or an alto hoping you might “bring on the Figgy Pudding”—courtesy The Flash Choir. An all-new, nontraditional choral group (formed under the watchful ears of Live Wire/Ditty Twister’s Pat Janowski and acclaimed songwriter Sarah Dougher), the group of singers were originally brought together en masse for Rinde Eckert’s opening-night TBA Festival performance, “On the Great Migration of Excellent Birds,” in Pioneer Courthouse Square in September. Look for more from them in the future!
We’re very excited to have the voices of friends and neighbors enriching the nooks and crannies of the Gerding Theater’s spaces at this time of year. There’s something about people singing together that, loaded with layers of reference to celebration, ritual, or we-shall-overcome unity, is moving, vividly gripping.
As things in the world sway, change and fade, the swell of voices singing on a winter evening brings us closer to Christmases and Sabbaths past and present and we find ourselves instantly warmed by the power of community, memory, hope and a good cardigan sweater.
Stop in early (select evenings, between 7-7:20 pm) for wassail, wine, or maybe a multi-voiced version of Izzy Berlin’s White Christmas.
