A Sneak Peek at Our Midsummer Photo Shoot

We made a little forest mischief this morning at our photo shoot for A Midsummer Night's Dream. In the production, Kayla Lian (Hermia), Ty Boice (Lysander), Jenni Putney (Helena) and Joel Gelman (Demetrius) play the four young lovers, who flee from their Athenian Kingdom into the woods in the wake of some serious parental disapproval. For the photo shoot, we wanted to recreate the whimsical and magical feel of the forest -- and the production in general. Check out some behind-the-scenes photos from the shoot, below!
The photo shoot began will all four lovers peacefully dreaming in the forest. Our fabulous photographer, Patrick, stood on the Mezzanine level of the Armory and shot each photo from above. Who's excited to see the finished photos?
For the photo shoot, the beautiful -- and real! -- foliage came from New Seasons' floral department (thanks guys!), as well as our photographer's backyard. Even the grass was real. The rolls of sod were brought in the night before the shoot, and left to dry overnight on the floor of the lobby of the Armory, aided by some large portable fans. We couldn't have those beautiful costumes getting muddy!
Poor Hermia. The photo below depicts Demetrius and Lysander, who have both been given a love potion, fawning all over Helena. Before being given the potion, both Lysander and Demetrius were in love with Hermia. Hermia returned Lysander's affections, and Helena was busy chasing after Demetrius. Now it appears that both young Athenian men want to chase after Helena. Confused yet? Fear not. We have a character map for that! Either way, Hermia has been left out in the cold, at least for now.
Just your average Athenian lovers, frolicking in the forest! Each scene set up required carefully arranging the foliage and flowers around the actors' heads and bodies. One might say that today I found my true calling in life: foliage fluffing.
