In the 1964 "Freedom Summer" campaign led by the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), more than 1,000 volunteers - mostly white, privileged, Northern college students - went to Mississippi to register black people to vote. Within 10 days, three participants had been murdered by local segregationists; dozens more would endure beatings, arrests and a daily litany of harassment and violence. Come take this heartfelt journey with May and Charles Thompson, two unremarkable people trapped in the aftermath of a remarkable time, as they try to make sense of how their dreams of changing the world turned into a nightmare that changed their lives forever.
This is an intense play, but is filled with laughter, as well.
Strong language and mature themes make this unsuitable for children under 13.
HALF PRICE tickets of $10 are available for anyone who has attended Portland Center Stage's performance of "Oklahoma." To get the discount, just come to the Bourbon at the Border show and tell them you are a VAP (Very Artsy Person).
Also, please spread the word to your networks about this powerful and passionate performance, which raises the questions: Will true love always save the soul? Are there some burdens that can only be purged by violence?
