Ever wonder what the critics have to say beyond their short, quoted lines in the media or wonder about the number of thumbs they held up or…didn’t? Here at Portland Center Stage we say "yes!" We want to learn more from the people who have dedicated themselves to writing about theater. Luckily, we have the honor of hosting a Q&A conversation with acclaimed theater critic and author,
Misha Berson.
Although she is busy as the Seattle Times’ theater critic, Misha is also a contributor to national theater magazines and has written many books including her most recent title Something’s Coming, Something Good: West Side Story and the American Imagination. Some of her other titles include, The San Francisco Stage and Between Worlds: Contemporary Asian-American Playwrights. Misha spent twelve years covering the theater scene in San Francisco before moving to Seattle in 1991 and has also taught courses in drama and interdisciplinary arts at the University of Washington and San Francisco State University.
PCS Artistic Director Chris Coleman has the privilege of interviewing Misha about her new book

Coming, Something Good: West Side Story and the American Imagination in a free, public event here at PCS.
West Side Story was Portland Center Stage's debut musical at the Gerding Theater at the Armory, so there is no doubt these two will display their shared passion for musical theater (and this musical particularly) during this conversation and touch on a variety of other theatrical topics. We are excited to hear from Misha how this beautifully tragic tale of love on the Upper West Side (and based, of course, on
Romeo and Juliet) transformed Broadway and how the film has survived the past 50 years. You can
listen to her recent Talk of the Nation interview on NPR about how the Broadway musical
West Side Story was almost “East Side Story” and how the now 50-year-old film has held up and still resonates with modern society.
This event with Chris Coleman and Misha Berson is free and open to the public! We welcome everyone interested to join us on the
Mezzanine Saturday, November 5, 2011 from 5-6 p.m.
