Bobby Bermea (Aide Williams) Bobby has been a professional actor for 22 years, a member of Actors Equity Association for 18 of those, the Artistic Associate of the critically acclaimed Sojourn Theatre, and is now the Artistic Director of BaseRoots Theatre. Bermea has appeared at LaMama in New York, Centerstage in Baltimore, Vortex Repertory in Austin and Intiman, ACT, The Group, The Langston Hughes Cultural Center, A-Ha, The Empty Space and The New Mercury Theatre in Seattle. In Portland, Bermea has performed with Artists Repertory, Miracle Theatre, Cygnet Productions, Tygre’s Heart and Sojourn Theatre. He received a Drammy for Best Supporting Actor for his work in A Raisin in the Sun. Bobby toured nationally with Artist Rep’s award-winning bilingual production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Other favorite performances have been Seguismundo in Life Is a Dream, Royal Boy in Police Boys, Booth in Top Dog/Underdog, Christopher in Blue/Orange, K in The Trial, Archibald in The Blacks and The Husband in Killers. Bermea is very excited to be making his debut at Portland Center Stage.

Gretchen Corbett (Nurse Ratched) Gretchen Corbett has appeared on and off Broadway and in leading roles in prominent regional theatres across the country including the New York, New Jersey and Oregon Shakespeare Festivals, Circle-in-the-Square, the Eugene O’Neill Festival, the Long Wharf Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre and the Mark Taper Forum, among others. In addition, she has appeared in numerous films, television series and movies made for television. Her local stage appearances have included productions for Portland Playhouse, Third Rail Rep, Sojourn Theatre and Portland Center Stage. She received lead actress awards for Happy Days, Molly Sweeney, It Had to Be You and A Lesson from Aloes. An award-winning director, Gretchen was the Resident Director for the ASK Theatre in Los Angeles, a theatre that nurtured new plays and playwrights. She also founded and for ten years ran the Haven Project in Portland, a non-profit theater that paired underserved children with professional actors to create original theater.
R. Ward Duffy (Randle McMurphy) This is Ward’s PCS debut. He most recently appeared as Jake in Theresa Rebeck’s The Understudy at the Cincinnati Playhouse (Acclaim Award). Michael Fisher-Welsh (Dr. Spivey) Michael last appeared at PCS in 2009 as Bob Cratchit in A Christmas Carol. Other roles at PCS include Zelnick in Frost/Nixon, Medvedenko in The Seagull, Archivist in Antigone and Dr. McSharry in The Cripple of Inishmann. At Artists Repertory: Nat Miller in Ah, Wilderness!, Joe Keller in All My Sons, Heisenberg in Copenhagen , Tom in Dinner With Friends, Reverend Hale in The Crucible, Dr. Chapman in A Question of Mercy, George in Indiscretions, Edmund in Long Day’s Journey Into Night and Hamlet in Fortinbras. Other favorite roles include Hamlet in Hamlet (Firehouse Theatre), Gerry Evans in Dancing at Lughnasa, Tom in The Glass Menagerie (Laughing Horse Theatre), Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet, Orlando in As You Like It (New Rose Theatre), Bernardo in West Side Story and Christian in Cyrano DeBergerac (The Musical Co.). Michael attended The American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco and currently teaches at Portland Actors Conservatory.
Val Landrum (Sandra) Val Landrum’s previous PCS credits include Daphne in The Thugs, Belle/Fanin A Christmas Carol, and various characters in four seasons of JAW. An Equity and award-winning actor originally from Chicago, Val has worked and trained with several regional theaters, including Steppenwolf and The Goodman. Since moving to Portland, she has been in productions for OCT, Third Rail Repertory, Artist Repertory, Profile Theatre, CoHo Productions, Portland Playhouse, Triangle Productions and Lakewood Theatre Company. Recently, she played Mrs. Kendal in The Elephant Man at Arkansas Repertory Theatre. A proud member of SAG, some of her favorite film credits include What the #$*! Do We (K)now, The Sasquatch Gang and Man Maid. She is very grateful and excited to be invited to this looney bin party.
Logan Loughmiller (Patient Ensemble) Logan is pleased to be working with such a talented group of people here at PCS. Some of Logan’s most memorable stage roles have been Satan in the Northwest premiere of The Last Days of Judas Iscariot and Jack in The Importance of Being Earnest (directed by Julie Akers). Most recently, Logan performed the role of The Projectionist in Limbo Films’ Projector, which was selected for the Best of Portland 2010 screening at a regional film festival. Later this spring Logan will be appearing as Bill in Twilight Repertory’s production of Lobby Hero.
Amy Newman (Nurse Flinn) Amy is delighted to make her Portland Center Stage debut with this production. Most recently, Amy appeared in Ah, Wilderness! with Artists Repertory Theatre. Other ART credits include All My Sons and Design For Living. She has worked locally with defunkt theatre, Oregon Children's Theatre, Profile and Theatre Vertigo (with whom she won a 2010 Drammy Award for Best Supporting Actress in God's Ear). Amy trained with George DiCenzo in Philadelphia and then earned a B.A. in Theater from Temple University. Some favorite roles from her Philadelphia days include Honey in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Berdine in Psycho Beach Party and Laura in The Glass Menagerie. Amy would like to offer a special thank you to Rose for this opportunity.
Tim Sampson (Chief Bromden) Born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma in 1956, Tim Sampson is of full-blood Creek (Muskogee) descent. He came to Hollywood in 1976. He made early appearances in Robert Altman’s Buffalo Bill and the Indians, and Clint Eastwood’s The Outlaw Josie Wales. Working as a stuntman, often doubling his father, actor Will Sampson, Tim helped found the International Stunt Association. Tim has appeared in more than thirty films and television shows, from The A-Team to the PBS docudrama Roanoke. Also appearing in Northern Exposure, Chuck, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and CSI: Miami. In 2000, Tim played the role of Chief Bromden, in the Steppenwolf Theatre production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Reprising the role his father played in the 1975 film, and working opposite actor Gary Sinise, Tim and Steppenwolf moved the production the following year to Broadway for a successful run that included a Tony Award for Best Play Revival. An accomplished musician and fine artist, Tim is a member of SAG and AFTRA. He currently lives in Venice, California.
Nick Schultz (Patient Ensemble) This is Nick's Portland Center Stage debut. Originally from Idaho, he now lives in Portland. He has performed around Portland, including productions with defunkt Theater and CoHo Productions, and several times in the annual Fertile Ground Festival. His most memorable role was playing Yoda from Star Wars for a hospital award ceremony (they needed an actor under 5'5). He has trained with professors from Portland State University, Portland Community College and the Portland Center Stage School of Theater.
Vin Shambry (Aide Warren) Vin Shambry is thrilled to be performing in Cuckoo’s Nest at PCS. Since returning home to Portland, Vin has performed as Franco Wicks in Superior Donuts (Artists Repertory Theatre), Mock Turtle in Alice in Wonderland: a Rock Opera (Oregon Children’s Theater) and in Songs for a New World (Miracle Theater). He has performed on Broadway as Tom Collins in Rent. Off-Broadway credits include Hair (chorus) at the Public Theater, Jake in Side Show and Hamlet in Hamletmachine. He also originated the role of Man #1 in Black Man Rising at Second Stages. National tours include Rent, Miss Saigon, Big River andHonk. Television/ film credits: Capital One March Madness, Gossip Girl (The CW), Missing Pieces (Sundance) and MTV’s Jackass. In 2007, Vin won the award of Most Outstanding Performance by an Actor at the 35th Annual Vivian Robinson Audelco Award for his performance in Black Man Rising.

Ebbe Roe Smith (Scanlon) Ebbe Roe Smith appeared in Sam Shepard’s Action, Angel City and Suicide in B Flat (directed by the author at the Magic Theatre, San Francisco) and in the American premiere of Curse of the Starving Class at the New York Public Theatre. In Los Angeles, he was in Marlene Meyer’s Etta Jenks and Len Jenkin’s Gogol at L.A.T.C., Steven Berkoff’s Metamorphosis at the Mark Taper Forum, and Methusalem with the Actor’s Gang. In Portland, he has appeared at Portland Center Stage in the world premieres of Glen Berger’s O Lovely Glowworm and Itamar Moses’ Celebrity Row (for which he received a Drammy Award), Jordan Harrison’s Act A Lady (for which he received a second Drammy) and Fin Kennedy’s How to Disappear Completely and Never Be Found (for which he received a third).
Robert M. Thomas (Patient Ensemble) Robert recently arrived in Portland from Northern California. His appearances there includ Twelfth Night, Arms & The Man, Much Ado About Nothing, Marvin’s Room and Wait Until Dark atthe Sonoma County Repertory Theatre in Sebastopol; Beyond Therapy, My Three Angels, Stop Kiss, Mere Mortals, The Road to Mecca, Glengarry Glen Ross, Inspecting Carol, Harvey, The Dining Room, Narnia and Little Shop of Horrors at Theater on the Square in Sonoma; On the Waterfront at the Nevada Theatre in Nevada City; and The Philadelphia Story, The Odd Couple, Jules Feiffer’s Hold Me!, Bury The Dead and Seascape at the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley.
Ryan Tresser (Billy Bibbit) Ryan Tresser is pleased to be appearing at PCS for the first time. Tracy S. Turner (Aide Turkel) Tracy is so very honored to be making his first appearance at PCS, moreover in such a stunning piece of work. This project will inaugurate his third year on the stage of Portland’s theatrical community where some of his recent roles have included Daddy Brubeck and Earl from the musicals Sweet Charity and Violet (respectively). Tracy has also had the pleasure and privilege of being part of the featured ensemble cast in the recent Mock’s Crest Productions of The Mikado, and Lakewood Center’s The Producers. Later this year, he is very much looking forward to being part of the cast in Seattle Opera’s upcoming summer production of Porgy and Bess. For Tracy, it has mostly been the undying love and support of Todd that has made this wonderful world of theater even remotely possible.
Sara Catherine Wheatley (Candy Starr) Sara Catherine Wheatley is thrilled to be back at PCS after playing the role of Olive Ostrovsky in The 25th Annual Putnman County Spelling Bee last spring. Sara Catherine is a native of Alabama who now calls Portland home. Local credits include Ragtime (Mother Understudy/Ensemble), Always...Patsy Cline (Patsy Cline), Alice & Wonderland: A Rock Opera (Alice), The Producers (Ulla), Beauty and the Beast (Babette) and The Last Five Years (Cathy). Sara Catherine holds a Bachelor's in Theatre from the University of Alabama (where, coincidentally, her debut role was Candy Starr). Many thanks to the staff at PCS whose hard work makes working here a dream, and to Rose for being awesome.
Creative Team Biographies:
Rose Riordan (Director) Rose is in her 15th season at Portland Center Stage, where she serves as associate artistic director. Previously at PCS she has directed A Christmas Story, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, The Receptionist, A Christmas Carol, Frost/Nixon, How to Disappear Completely and Never Be Found, Doubt, The Underpants, The Pillowman by Martin McDonagh and The Thugs by Adam Bock, which won four Drammy Awards, including Best Ensemble and Best Director. Last fall, she directedTelethon at Portland Playhouse. She also directed The Receptionist at CoHo Productions, for which Sharonlee McLean won a Drammy for Best Actress. Born and raised in Alaska, Rose began her career in theater before she had acquired a lexicon for describing the work. Prior to the age of 10, she wrote, directed and produced plays, most of them backyard productions for family, friends and neighbors. Her first “professional” full-length play, an intense examination of six stewardesses and their “man troubles,” was presented at Eagle River Elementary School. A defining moment for her, it solidified Rose’s commitment to a pursuit of theater with the sole desire to illuminate and be illuminated. In 1999 she founded Portland Center Stage’s annual JAW: A Playwrights Festival. JAW has been instrumental in developing new work for the PCS repertory: Outrage, Flesh and Blood, Another Fine Mess, O Lovely Glowworm, Celebrity Row, Act a Lady, The Thugs and A Feminine Ending. She directed staged readings for plays at four of the JAW festivals—The Thugs (2005), Telethon (2006), A Story About a Girl (2007) and 99 Ways to F*** a Swan(2009), The North Plan (2010). She enjoys being part of a company committed to new work and having a beautiful building in which to work.
Tony Cisek (Scenic Designer) Tony has collaborated with Ms. Riordan on A Christmas Story and Frost/Nixon at PCS, as well as designing Anna in the Tropics, A Feminine Ending, and the premiere of Sometimes a Great Notion, for which he received a Drammy Award. Tony’s work has been also been seen at Roundabout Theatre, New York Theatre Workshop, the Goodman, the Guthrie, Arena Stage, South Coast Rep, Milwaukee Rep, Indiana Rep, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Intiman, Folger Theatre, Ford’s Theatre, the Kennedy Center, the McCarter, Syracuse Stage, Delaware Theatre Company, Two River Theatre, Berkshire Theatre Festival, Arden Theatre, Wolf Trap Opera, Woolly Mammoth, and Signature Theatre, among others. He holds an M.F.A. in Theatre Design from New York University, and in addition to the Drammy, has received a Barrymore nomination and four Helen Hayes Awards for Outstanding Set Design.
Jeff Cone (Costume Designer) Jeff, costume shop manager for Portland Center Stage, has designed The Imaginary Invalid, A Christmas Story, An Iliad, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Mike’s Incredible Indian Adventure, The 39 Steps, Snow Falling on Cedars, Grey Gardens, Guys and Dolls, Doubt, The Little Dog Laughed, Sometimes a Great Notion, The Underpants, Cabaret, Bad Dates, The Pillowman, Act a Lady, Misalliance, This Wonderful Life, I Am My Own Wife and West Side Story since PCS opened the Gerding Theater at the Armory. Other PCS credits include the world premieres of Celebrity Row and Another Fine Mess, as well asUnderneath the Lintel, Things of Dry Hours, Anna in the Tropics, King Lear, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, True West, Flesh and Blood, A New Brain, Closer, Blues for an Alabama Sky, Bus Stop and Dirty Blonde. Jeff received Drammy Awards for Best Costume Design for both Act a Lady and Dirty Blonde. Highlights of his 20-year career include the world premiere of Pearl Cleage’s Flyin’ West at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, with subsequent productions at Indiana Repertory Theatre, Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Long Wharf Theatre; an expressionistic Charlotte’s Web and 10 annual productions of A Christmas Carolat the Alliance; and the coordination of costumes for Seattle Opera’s productions of Andrea Chènier and La Traviata.
Diane Ferry Williams (Lighting Designer) Diane Ferry Williams as always, is pleased to be returning to Portland. Diane is the Resident Lighting Designer at the Marriott Theatre in Chicago and has also worked for many other theatres around the country, including The Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Theatre Under the Stars, The Goodspeed, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, The Goodman, Pittsburgh Public Theatre, ACT Seattle, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Ford’s Theatre, Hubbard Street and Regional Dance America. International work includes The Harlem Gospel Singers in Paris and their European tour, and Die Shone Und Das Biest in Berlin and their European tour. She has also lit several national tours and the premiere of Don’t Stop the Carnival by Jimmy Buffet and Herman Wouk. Awards include a Jeff Award, an After Dark Award, a Carbonelle Award, three Drammy awards (the most recent being Snow Falling on Cedars) and seven Jeff nominations. Diane has a Master of Fine Arts in Theatrical Design from Northwestern University.
Sam Kusnetz (Sound Designer) Sam composes music and designs sound and projections for theater. Previous designs at Portland Center Stage include Frost/Nixon, Mike's Incredible Indian Adventure, and Ragtime (associate sound design). Other credits include sound for Arms and the Man (Off-Broadway, Jean Cocteau Repertory), sound and projections for The Wonderful World of Dissocia(Third Rail Repertory), and sound for Alice & Wonderland (Oregon Children's Theatre). Sam is also the proud co-creator of Anonymous Theatre.
Ted deChatelet (Fight Director) Ted is a delighted to return to PCS to work on One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. He is a Certified Teacher of Stage Combat with the Society of American Fight Directors and co-owner of Revenge Arts Stage Combat. He has choreographed violence for more than 50 productions at various venues including Portland Center Stage,Third Rail Rep, Artists’ Rep, CoHo Productions and Profile Theatre. Ted teaches acting, movement, voice and speech in the BFA program at Western Oregon University.
