VERTICAL THOUGHTS:
String Quartet No. 2 by Morton Feldman
Performed by Third Angle Ensemble
When: Friday February 24, 2 - 6 p.m.
Where: Ellyn Bye Studio Theater
What: A magical musical abstraction . . .
Morton Feldman found inspiration in the paintings of the abstract expressionists including Mark Rothko. Like Rothko, Feldman's family were Russian-Jewish immigrants. In the 1970s, Feldman wrote a number of pices around twenty-minutes in length, including Rothko Chapel, written for the building of the same name which houses paintings by Mark Rothko.
PCS is excited to host the Third Angle Ensemble as they take on Feldman's epic String Quartet No. 2, a four-hour masterpiece of beautiful harmonies and invention. Come and go as you please, or settle in for the whole thing! The performance takes place downstairs in the Ellyn Bye Studio Theater prior to our 7:30 p.m. opening-night performance of Red.
Also, be sure to check out a performance of Rothko's Chapel at the Portland Art Museum on Saturday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m.!
