On Monday night, Google finally launched their popular Street View mapping feature for Portland, allowing PDX residents to drill down from the graphicky map level to an actual daytime 360 degree panorama photo of where they are going. These aren’t live images but a quilt of images taken over many weeks by a special six camera top-loaded car as it travels the streets of our fair city (in this virtual PDX, the marquee at Powell’s is advertising an August 9 reading).
I missed the launch completely so I couldn’t contribute to the hundreds of wasted hours spent at workplaces across town on Tuesday morning; workers looking up their home and business addresses hoping for the glimmer of immortality that accompanies being captured by the Street View cam while walking around outside their favorite hangouts. All the same, last night I dutifully looked up the Armory and I’m proud to say our snapshots turned out great!
Here’s my favorite new shot of us on the web! And other good ones here and here. The façade has already changed from what is visible there so this is a snapshot of PCS history (guess what has changed and leave it in the comments—first correct guess gets massive browny points).
