During the final preview for Cabaret on Thursday night, I sat next to a couple who asked why I was taking notes. I told them, and the gentleman introduced himself as Tom. With a little coaxing, I learned that he is remodeling a house that he expects to sell at NE 29th and Alberta. Tom and his wife (girlfriend) look to be in their mid-thirties and had never been to a PCS show. I asked why they decided to come.
He said his wife (girlfriend) wanted to get the tickets - and she admitted that the show was one of her favorites and they had to see it. He said they see shows all over town but this was their first time at the Armory - and that they were blown away. Cool.
Some fun emails arrived this morning about “Cabaret” I thought I’d share.
First, from Cara Ungar-Guitierez, Executive Director for Oregon Council for the Humanities:
“I saw the show on Tuesday night and loved it!!! Everone was brilliant; the “raunchiness” was perfect; the song/scene where “everything changed” was deeply moving and unnerving as well. Folks in the arts/humanities community are raving!”
From Curt Columbus, Artistic Director of Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, RI:
“Just wanted to send a little note to say thank you so very much for the show last night. We talked about it for hours afterward (hallmark of great theater) and my inlaws loved it. I know they will be back. I didn’t want to hang you up after the show, since I know what it’s like during previews, but I truly loved the whole experience. You are making something special and unique happen in the American Theater, and I was honored to be in the audience for the show.
“And what a show! Please pass my congratulations on to your cast and your design team. Gorgeousness and gorgeousity! As I said last night, even the supporting cast was amazing, it was truly an ensemble achievement (that hits my g-spot every time, you know.”
From Larry Rosencrantz at The Apen Group:
“I have just one word to say to you about the Season Opener - Brilliant! From play selection to casting, it’s masterful. It should be a fabulous start to a most successful season.”
From Jessica Hamilton at Ball Janik:
“You should know that a file clerk in my office saw Cabaret last night (she had gotten tickets from a partner who couldn’t make the show) and said she already wants to go back, and was absolutely blown away by the performance, especially Wade’s. She said she would tell all her friends (she’s early thirties) and said that she is excited about going to more plays at PCS, and was asking about The Underpants, because she saw it in the playbill. Very cool!”
