Charles Dickens
Author
Arguably one of history’s greatest novelists, Dickens was born February 7, 1812. As a youth of only 12 years, he worked in a boot factory for 10 hours a day. This formative experience contributed significantly to a career chronicling the poverty-stricken, long after Dickens had become “well-to-do.” He left a mark on history as a social campaigner, his epitaph reading: “He was a sympathizer to the poor, the suffering, and the oppressed…” Dickens became well-known for tales which, while comical and filled with remarkably imaginative characters, were also scathing commentaries on social imbalance. Dickens’ ability to both communicate and elicit profound compassion caused his impact to endure well beyond his demise in 1870. There have been hundreds of adaptations of his works done for film, television and stage, and his novels continue to hold a nearly sacred place on high school reading lists in English-speaking countries around the globe. A Christmas Carol is one of his best-known books, with new adaptations almost every year. Ironically, Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in an attempt to prevent looming financial disaster due to poor book sales. Years later, Dickens shared that he was “deeply affected” in writing A Christmas Carol and the novel rejuvenated his career as a renowned author.
