The first year I lived away from home, I was far too broke for a noble fir tree - the kind we had always gotten. I reluctantly picked out a doug fir, dragged it home, and got it all the way into the house before bursting into tears. I actually took it back to the lot, and the very nice tree man gave me the noble instead, no cost.

My daughter,Sharon, and her husband Steve arrived home from Ft. Hood Christmas to celebrate Christmas. My husband worked for the Forest Service and a co-worker owned a tree farm near Bull Run. Steve, a forestry major took great care to find just the right tree. On the way back we decided to stop at the Shingle Mill, a restaurant owned by a friend in Estacada. When we arrived, Sim, the owner, assured us that there were so many trees in the area, no one would bother. He was wrong! When we finished lunch, our tree was gone!

When I was in 4th grade I had to wear head gear. Not just the around the neck kind, but the full on helmet of straps working to straighten my teeth. I got up early on exmas morning, thinking no one else was up yet, and ran down to the living room to see what "Santa" brought me. Then >snap< someone snuck around the corner and took my picture. My hair sticking out of the head gear crown as though I'd been electrified. All I can say is thank God it was pre-digital times!

There was one Christmas that ended with my grandmother falling down the stairs. (She took off to get something from the basement in a hurry before everyone left. This stair is long & steep.) Luckily she came out alright, nothing broken or anything. But it sounded BAD and scared everyone. Cherry Mristmas!

For some odd reason, at Christmas time I was often sick when I was a kid. I'm the oldest in a family of five girls my father, a photography enthusiast, and my mother, an amateur seamstress, usually viewed holidays as an opportunity to shoot "portraits" of all their girls in newly sewn matching or coordinating attire. But, because of my habit of being sick on Christmas Day there are several well composed 1960s black and white photos of me lying on the sofa in my robe under a nice blanket with my sisters gathered around in their new outfits.
