Tuesday, January 20, the U.S. welcomes a new president to office. As the nation celebrates one of the hallmarks of our democracy — the peaceful passing of power from one leader to the next — Portland Center Stage offers a one day sale to its current production, the world premiere of Apollo.

Nancy Keystone’s compelling original work about America in the second half of the 20th century celebrates much of what makes our country great — innovation, aspiration, and an overriding belief that we can continue to make our nation even greater — while also questioning what some of our choices may have cost us. And isn’t that another marker of a true democracy?

Tonight we’ve invited 30 or so of our closest twitter friends to join us in the balcony of the theater to “live tweet” their experience of Apollo.

You can follow along live from home (wherever home might be) by going to search.twitter.com and doing a search for #apollo, starting at 7:30 pm this evening. Its a brave experiment in a new kind of audience interaction, and we can’t wait to see how it goes!

We’ll post regular updates for how its going through at least act one here, but to follow the full performance you’ll want to head over here, do a search for #apollo (choose english only because for some reason the germans love to tweet about
Apollo) and update every few minutes or so. If you want to follow along on this blog you’ll want to follow from the bottom up.

Eli M. Rosenbaum & Nancy Keystone: A Conversation

The “Real” Eli M.Rosenbaum, director of the U.S. Justice Department’s Office of Special Investigations , joins Nancy Keystone, playwright/director of Apollo for a pre-show conversation on the actual events that inspired Apollo and Rosenbaum’s pivotal role in unmasking the Nazi-era war-crimes of Arthur Rudolph, who ran the V-2 missile factory at Dora-Mittelbau concentration camp.

Rosenbaum, who is featured prominently as a character in Keystone’s Apollo, was the man primarily responsible for  setting the historic record straight on Rudolph, who, with the complicity of the US government, went on to become one the architects of the Saturn V rocket and one of America’s more venerated,  seminal figures in the race to the moon.

Conversation moderated by Steven Wasserstrom, Tonkon Professor of Judaic Studies and the Humanities at Reed College. Reception to follow.

The calculations are done,the 3000 file boxes are folded and stacked, and the only thing left for Nancy to do is make sure her opening night togs are pressed and prepped.

Apollo world premieres tonight and the theater is a buzz with anticipation- literally.

Most of the PCS staff are busy caffienating themselves to make sure they’ll be bright and perky all the way through the mind-blowing moments in Act III, like this one:
