The Theater
Now in its 20th season, Portland Center Stage (Chris Coleman, Artistic Director; Greg Phillips, Executive Director) is the largest producing theater in Portland, Oregon. Portland Center Stage’s mission is to inspire our community by bringing stories to life in unexpected ways.
PCS is committed to developing original work through its new play development programs and to developing new audiences through its education and outreach programs.
Portland Center Stage’s home since Fall 2006 – the Gerding Theater at the Armory – is the first building in the Pacific Northwest, and the only historic renovation or performing arts facility in the world, to be awarded LEED Platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
Of the twelve plays produced to date in the Armory, a third enjoyed sold-out runs with extensions to accommodate the demand for tickets. Production attendance in 06/07 increased 33%. Single tickets last season grew by 57% and total ticket income was up 47%. The number of subscribers grew from 7,130 in 05/06 to 7,910 in 06/07, and then increased again for 07/08 – to 9,365 –representing a 31% increase in subscribers in the past two years. The number of new individual contributors has also increased – growing by 119% between 05/06 and 06/07.
West Side Story, which opened the 06/07 season, proved to be the most well-attended and financially successful production in PCS’s history – until it was supplanted this fall by the 07/08 season opener, Cabaret, which exceeded its revenue projections by more than 41%.
Over the past year, the Armory has become a popular venue for social events, conferences, fundraisers, and public meetings. PCS currently serves nearly 140,000 people annually.
