There was an understudy in the role of the elderly mom. She literally read from a script during the entire second half of the show. A serious disappointment for professional theater. We felt uncomfortable and embarrassed for the rest of the cast. They really shouldn't have performed that night, let alone let their customers pay all that money to see a rank production. She has all of the repressed ambition of a Mama Rose but instead of pushing her daughter into the limelight or showing her a world of possibilities, she keeps her forever in her shadow, locked away in the decaying gothic mansion Grey Gardens. Big Edie/Little Edie is one of the best musical theater roles for a veteran actress in decades and the second act numbers "The Revolutionary Costume for Today" and "Jerry Likes My Corn" vividly capture the dysfunctional mother-daughter relationship and its fallout.
