OCF Helps "Astoria" Reach Creative Heights with $100,000 Grant!

We were thrilled to start off our new fiscal year with the wonderful news that Portland Center Stage at The Armory had been awarded a $100,000 grant through The Oregon Community Foundation’s Creative Heights initiative. The grant will be used to develop and produce Astoria, Artistic Director Chris Coleman’s stage adaptation of Peter Stark’s acclaimed non-fiction book. Astoria, one of the plays on our Northwest Stories series, will receive its world premiere on The Armory’s U.S. Bank Main Stage this coming January.

Our grant was one of 20 (totaling $966,890) awarded statewide this year by the Creative Heights Initiative, which was launched in 2014 to enable arts and culture organizations to test new ideas and stretch their creative capacity. The initiative is itself made possible the Fred W. Fields Fund of The Oregon Community Foundation, established in 2012 with a $150 million bequest, that aims to support education and the arts throughout Oregon. More information on The Oregon Community Foundation and Creative Heights can be found at www.oregoncf.org.

Other exciting grant news this past month included:

  • A $40,000 Cultural Development Grant from the Oregon Cultural Trust in support of our 2017 JAW: A Playwrights Festival, PCS’s nationally renowned new play development program. The Oregon Cultural Trust is funded by gifts from Oregonians and last year’s record fundraising enabled the Trust to increase its FY17 grant awards by 9% and make 149 grants totaling $2.9 million to Oregon’s cultural nonprofits. To learn more about how you can double the impact of your gift to PCS by making a gift to the Cultural Trust, check out their handy FAQ page here, culturaltrust.org.
  • A $13,750 matching grant from Travel Oregon for our Explore Great Northwest Stories project. We’ll be using the funds to develop and market web-based, mobile-friendly visitor itineraries based on the plays in our Northwest Stories series, with options to explore our fascinating state by car or bike. Some of our partners in this project include the Astoria Chamber of Commerce, Mt. Hood Territory, Willamette Valley Visitors Association, Eastern Oregon Visitors Association, the Oregon Historical Society, and Portland Art Museum.
  • Operating support grants from The Collins Foundation, the Rose E. Tucker Charitable Trust, U.S. Bank, and the Oregon Arts Commission. We love project grants. We really love operating support, and we greatly appreciate these and our other generous, longtime funders who help sustain all that we do at Portland Center Stage!

Thank you to all of our generous supporters!
