Specialty Cocktails at The Armory

Posted 02 October 2017

To kick off the 30th Anniversary Season, The Armory Bar team has crafted six delicious cocktails. The first four cocktails, Maple Avenue, Satisfied Mourners, Sex with Joan and Raincoat of Love, were inspired by our U.S Bank Main Stage production of Fun Home running until October 22. The #341 cocktail was themed after Every Brilliant Thing running in the Ellyn Bye Studio through November 5. Throughout the season, we’ll offer “To 30 Years,” a bubbly cocktail to celebrate our 30th Anniversary Season.

Bar Supervisor Melissa Larrabee describes the specialty cocktails in more detail:

Maple Avenue is the location of the “Fun Home” as heard in the second song of the show, “Welcome to Our House on Maple Ave.” Hearing the word “maple” excited me because it made me think of bacon which gave me the chance to try fat-washing. Fat washing is a growing trend in the bartending world where spirits are infused with a fat-based flavor. Using Eastside Distillery’s Burnside Bourbon, I was able to created bacon-washed bourbon. With this amazing creation, I shook together maple syrup, a splash of apple juice and Addition’s Rosemary Cocktail Spice creating a slightly sweet, savory treat. Maple Avenue is garnished with a maple-coated bacon bite.

Satisfied Mourners My favorite part of Fun Home is the song “Come to the Fun Home” where the children decide to create a commercial for the funeral home. The whole song cracks me up, but the line that stood out the most was, “you know our mourners, so satisfied.” From this came the inspiration for the cocktail Satisfied Mourners. Thinking about funerals, I thought of doing a floral cocktail which was perfect because New Deal just released their Cascadia American Bitter Liqueur. It’s an infusion of rose petals, wild lavender and other select botanicals. I think it pairs well with New Deal’s Portland Dry 33 Gin and then I mixed in lime juice and Reed’s Ginger Brew. To keep with the floral theme, the garnish is an edible flower … yes, you can eat it!
Sex with Joan This cocktail comes from the song “Changing My Major” when Medium Allison sings “I’m changing my major to sex with Joan.” I thought of doing a play-on the classic cocktail of Sex on the Beach which consists of vodka, peach schnapps and any combination of cranberry, pineapple and/or orange juice. Instead of using straight orange juice, I decided to try combining Absolut Mandarin with Licor 43 (Cuarenta y Tres). Licor 43 is a Spanish liqueur I have been wanting to use in a drink. It has 43 ingredients giving flavors of citrus and vanilla. I added in a splash of cranberry juice and leveled it off with Peach-Pear La Croix. Of course, it is garnished with a cherry.

Raincoat of Love The song “Raincoat of Love” comes at a point of the musical where young Allison is trying to drown out the noise of her parents fighting. Gummy bears as a garnish came to mind because not only are they a comfort food and childlike, but teddy bears are a universal sign of comfort. To go with the gummy bears, I was looking for a fun drink with a bright color. I decided to do Pomegranate Paloma. For this I used Lunazul Silver Tequila, Pama Pomegranate Liqueur, grapefruit juice, lime juice and soda water. Haribo gummy bears are thrown on top to be enjoyed.

The #341 The 341st thing on the list of Every Brilliant Thing is alcohol, so of course we took advantage of that in order to create a specialty cocktail inspired by the show. For the #341 cocktail, I played with some fall flavors, including pear and nutmeg, mixed together Below Deck Silver Rum, pear juice, lemon juice and nutmeg simple.

To 30 Years, of course, has some bubbles, as well as candied pearls because pearls are the designated gift for a 30th anniversary. Plus we’re located in the Pearl District! I added some Crème de Violette and lemon juice for flavor and a beautiful color.
