First Return - Gallery Exhibit by Pouvwa Nwa
Opening on April 25th at PCS, First Return is a Gallery Exhibit by Pouvwa Nwa.
First Return is an introduction to an experiment recently initiated by Pouvwa Nwa. It explores the hypothesis that, through close study of the forms of our anatomy, the body dysmorphia and internal-sectional dysphoria of being human might be confronted—perhaps even healed. By examining the body not as a fixed identity but as a landscape of shapes, divisions, and intricate systems, for us to occupy for a while. The work seeks to understand whether observation, attention, and re-familiarization can soften the fractures between perception and embodiment.
Pouvwa Nwa, (poov-wa new-wa) a multidisciplinary artist and curator whose practice aims to examine the complexities of the human condition, identity, and spirituality. Using anatomical references and fragmented forms, they create work that invites viewers to dissect, and sit with the dysmorphic relationship between body and self that comes with our humanity. Pouvwa Nwa (Black Power: Haitian Creole) is a creative platform reflecting their multidimensional approach to art and personal liberation. Through Pouvwa Nwa, they celebrate the beauty of blackness, individuality, and cultural expression. Together, their artistic and curatorial work reflects a commitment to honoring the body, celebrating marginalized identity, and cultivating spaces where creativity and community can thrive.
Portland Center Stage is committed to identifying & interrupting instances of racism & all forms of oppression, through the principles of inclusion, diversity, equity, & accessibility (IDEA).
