Gallery Exhibit: Subway: Patterns of Life
Opening on March 5th at PCS, Subway: Patterns of Life is an art exhibit by Annette Sabater. Annette was inspired during her seven week stay in Manhattan and Brooklyn in spring of 2023. She was captivated by the subway system, the people during their commute and the mosaic art seen throughout many of the subway stops.
Annette is originally from the Seattle area. After college she began her physical therapy career in Minneapolis, then moved to Portland Oregon in 1987.
As a young girl, she was supported in art and frequently reminded how this carried on family tradition. She pursued art throughout her school years and graduated high school showing promise in art. Entering college, she chose the career of physical therapy, believing this would not only support her but also her creative desires.
Education in physical therapy not only provided her with a rewarding career in pediatrics but also gave her another eye to view the world. The close study of human anatomy, the courses in movement and the connection with individuals facing disability opened her eyes to new layers of human complexity. She continued art studies while pursuing her physical therapy degree, completing a minor in art. She had opportunities to complete figurative work of patients and apply her anatomic knowledge during figure drawing classes. She enjoys drawing the human body in both realistic and abstract forms. She emphasizes hands and feet in her figurative work, as these aspects of the human body are expressive and remind me of our commonalities. Her most recent work has been thematic.
Portland Center Stage is committed to identifying & interrupting instances of racism & all forms of oppression, through the principles of inclusion, diversity, equity, & accessibility (IDEA).
