Reviews and Features

Marty Hughley | The Oregonian [Review 06 Dec 2010]

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Even if that means being measured for an elf costume.

“The Santaland Diaries”—whether the original comic monologue by David Sedaris or Joe Mantello’s stage adaptation—is a story built on economic anxiety. David, unemployed in New York, finds himself “$20 away from walking dogs” for a living, and so takes a seasonal job at Macy’s and becomes Crumpet the elf. It’s far from the position he envisioned when he moved to the city (some sort of prominent role with “One Life To Live”), but he imagines that at least the “fluffy wonderland” of the store “won’t be quite as sad as standing on a corner dressed as a french fry.”

But before the show opens again for Portland audiences, let’s explore the man who was and forever will be the original Santaland Elf.
