Fat Ham

Fat Ham
A co-production with Portland Playhouse[?]
April 19 – May 17, 2026
On the Main Stage

Fat Ham

  • By James Ijames
  • Directed by Charles Grant

JUMP TO: Dates, Run Time, Playbill, & More

A week after Juicy’s father dies, he finds himself at a backyard barbecue  celebrating the marriage of his mother and uncle—sound familiar? James Ijames’s Pulitzer Prize-winning reimagining of Shakespeare's Hamlet casts the sweet prince of Denmark as a queer, Black boy from the South. In this comedy born from tragedy, Juicy must choose between seeking vengeance for his father’s death or staying true to his own heart—a story of identity, family, and liberation as we become our truest selves.

Full Content Advisory

Fat Ham includes strong profanity, the “n-word” (spoken by characters of color), and language that may be considered culturally derogatory, fatphobic, or homophobic. The play also includes candid sexual content, including discussion of oral sex, simulated sexual acts, comic gestures, and sounds of pornography from a phone. Physical violence is depicted, along with alcohol use and references to drug use.

Recommended for high school audiences and older. Parents and guardians know their children best and are encouraged to review this advisory when deciding if the production is appropriate for younger viewers. At its core, Fat Ham is a joyful, comic reimagining of Shakespeare’s Hamlet about love and family.

“[Fat Ham] will keep you howling from beginning to end. DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW!!!” — Broadway World

Marcel M. Johansen
(He/Him)
, Tio

Marcel Mawulorm Johansen is an interdisciplinary artist from Tema, Ghana, currently based in Portland, Oregon. His art comes from a place of childlike curiosity about the world, and himself in relation to it—in search of the thin through lines that thread our shared and individual human experiences. His work is deeply rooted in personal experience, ancestral memory, and cultural lineage. It is a spiritual practice as much as a creative one—cathartic, revealing, and sometimes healing.

Marcel’s modes of expression follow the flow of inspiration and opportunity. He currently weaves between film photographs, video, poetry, event production, film/theatre acting and experimental performance art. You can often find him hosting Portland’s iteration of the on-going “RNBAFTERDARK” series at L’atelier Yaffe, or on a leisurely walk, staring at things.
